We wanted to update you on the progress of the proposed pipeline between Bexwell and Bury St Edmunds since our last correspondence in February 2021.

This pipeline, part of our 25-year Water Resources Management Plan for the East of England, will enable us to reduce the amount of water we take from the environment.

It will also strengthen resilience for communities in your area by reducing the number of homes and businesses which rely on a single water source.

What work have we done so far?

We submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Scoping Opinion request to the local planning authorities in September 2020 and have since been preparing an Environmental Statement which will report the findings of the Environmental Impact Assessment. This will be submitted as part of an application for full planning permission for the proposed scheme (due in June 2021).

We’ve completed our initial desktop research and have undertaken some limited surveys and ecological field work.

This information has been used to develop our preferred route for the 70km pipeline, which we shared during our online virtual customer engagement event, in February this year.

We also shared this preferred route with landowners ahead of our ground investigation and archaeological surveying. It is still subject to change and will continue to be discussed with local authorities and landowners.

What’s happening next?

We appreciate that our ground investigation work may impact some people within your area and we are in contact with landowners and farmers about the proposed preferred route.

Ground investigation involves digging trial pits and/or drilling small diameter boreholes to investigate the underlying geology and ground conditions.

We can get a lot of information from soil and geology maps but the best way to determine ground conditions is to visit a site and carry out these investigations.

We expect to begin our work next week commencing in the Hilgay area and from the start of June moving into other areas along the pipeline route. We anticipate that these surveys will take around two months to complete.
